Laura Torrado

Visual artist and PhD in Fine Arts from the UCM. She is currently a professor at the Department of Art in the Faculty of Fine Arts of Cuenca, UCLM.

Granted by the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation of Venice, she obtains in 1993 a Fulbright Scholarship for the expansion of artistic studies in the United States of America. Between 1993-95 she resides in New York, where she collaborates with the Department of Conservation of the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art of New York, carries out postgraduate studies at the School of Visual Arts and at New York University. In this period she began her artistic research on the poetics of the body, making the photographic series Transhumance, La Escalera, or Autorretratos. In 1995, already in Madrid, fruit of his search in the sources of the western pictorial tradition, recreating fictions that question the established stereotypes around the feminine, she realizes the series Hammam, El dormitorio, Si te quise.

Prizes: first edition of the Altadis Prize for Plastic Arts 2000; first edition of the 2002 Purificación García Photography Award, the 2002 and 2003 Caja Madrid Generation, the Madrid 2003 Art Creation Award with the documentary project Down World. In 2004, she was awarded in the first edition of the Plastic Arts Prize of Caja Ahorros del Mediterráneo to make the documentary Other Homes Other Realities, in 2008 she received the Plastic Arts Prize of the Pollensa Museum, Mallorca. Her latest series, Suspended Life 2010-2017, is part of the Baroque Vanitas, through a search for beauty between Eros and Thanatos, and has been a finalist in the Pilar Citoler photography award.

Present in the second edition of Paris Photo 1997 with Anne Barrault Gallery, she has participated in three editions of Arco 2000-02, with Oliva Arauna Gallery in Madrid (Spain).
