Galería Freijo will participate in ARCOmadrid 2025 with two projects. Within the General Programme we present a dialogue between the works of Concha Jerez and Rocío Garriga, and a Duo Project by Ramón Mateos and Olalla Gómez Valdericeda curated by Nerea Ubieto.
The project we present for ARCOmadrid 2025 General Program accentuates the visibility of the work created by women, a project that Freijo Gallery has been developing since its inception. For this next edition, we propose a dialogue between the work of two Spanish women artists: Concha Jerez (ES, 1941) and Rocío Garriga (ES, 1984). Concha Jerez's historical works from the 1970s, presented at the CAAC - Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville in 2024 and at the MNCARS in Madrid in 2020, are placed in dialogue with two major works from Rocío Garriga's latest exhibitions at the gallery. Key pieces which belong to her research on the bombing of European zoos in World War II. The rereading of history thus becomes the main common point of their works.
The duo proposal by Ramón Mateos and Olalla Gómez Valdericeda, curated by Nerea Ubieto tackles socio-political issues through a series of pieces that, together, present the perverse scenario of current capitalist accumulation without anesthesia.Times of economic collapse throughout history are highlighted in the Crisis polyptych by Ramón Mateos, which gathers, through dates, every financial crisis from the first one in 1637 to the present day: more than 20 in barely 400 years. A question arises: are they not provoked by the capitalist system itself as a mechanism of strengthening and self-regulation? Olalla Gómez Valdericeda's pieces belonging to the Smile project, a sculpture and a video, allude to the processes of productivist self-exploitation that govern our everyday lives.
