Teresa Serrano at the MUPAM

April 9, 2024

The Museo del Patrimonio Municipal de Málaga (MUPAM) will screen Teresa Serrano's audiovisual work The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Fence from 9 April to 25 May.

Her first work in this medium, Siempre el pasto del vecino es más verde (The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Fence), deals with the complex subject of human migration. By fusing images of monarch butterflies, which travel every year from southern Canada to central Mexico, with those of migrants from Televisa's archives, she created a powerful visual document, conceived as an experimental exploration of migration and memory.

Filmed at a time when editing resources were less sophisticated, this work is hauntingly beautiful, superimposing images of the thousands of butterflies in flight with those of the people on their arduous journey. Without blending completely, the two situations are visible and distinguishable. It is the light that passes through the material that allows us to establish a connection between them.
